Kingston was a railroad junction, a hospital town, the site of Sherman's headquarters in both the Spring and Fall of 1864, the site of the last Confederate surrender east of the Mississippi on 12 May 1865, and also where the Andrews Raiders waited nervously for southbound trains to get by on 12 April 1862.
